2020.11.27 11:59 outbound_flight Lengthy Review - Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron (Nintendo DS)

When you think of the Battlefront series, you of course think of the iconic battles, their sense of scale and the absolute chaos of a few dozen players clashing in interstellar war zones. The series has always been awesome to look at, with the most recent entries being some of the best-looking games on the market to date; the main premise of the series almost demanding that level of detail to match what has been presented in the movies.
So what's a Battlefront game doing on the Nintendo DS?
Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron was released in 2009, at a time when the Nintendo DS handheld was selling like crazy. Today, it is the best-selling gaming handheld of all time, and the second best-selling console of all-time with over 150 million units sold. Meaning that it was frequently worth the effort for devs to create a separate, scaled-down version of their video game for the DS, even if realistically it made no sense on its face. (Remember, we got Guitar Hero on the DS!) The DS was not a powerful device by any means, and most ports had to deal with some rather hefty hardware limitations.
After the success of Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron for the Sony PSP, a second entry in the handheld branch of the series, Elite Squadron, went into development, very likely starting out as an attempt to resurrect the cancelled Battlefront 3 by Free Radical Design. Indeed, several assets and concepts from BF3 made it into the final product. While Rebellion Developments began work on the PSP version, N-Space began work on the DS version. At the time, N-Space was mostly known for their licensed tie-in games, as well as the second-party Nintendo Gamecube title, Geist, which was famously developed with input by Shigeru Miyamoto.
This was not N-Space's first rodeo when it came to porting big games to the Nintendo DS, or even working within the Star Wars franchise. They had also shipped a Nintendo DS version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed the year before, while also developing DS versions for the Call of Duty series (remarkably, from CoD4 all the way until CoD: Modern Warfare 3) and Goldeneye 007.
As far as premise and plot, the PSP and DS versions are mostly similar: Set just before Episode 3, the story follows two clone brothers, X1 and X2, who are unique in that they were not cloned from the genetic template of Jango Fett. After earning some attention from Chancellor Palpatine for their heroic acts on Tatooine, they are swept up into the Battle of Coruscant by way of Palpatine's kidnapping by General Grievous. Afterwards, the protagonist, X2, begins to question his orders in the wake of Order 66, putting him at odds with his Imperial true-believer of a twin brother. As the years go on, they find themselves on opposite sides of the war.
The surprising part of Elite Squadron is just how much of the SW timeline it spans. Though it starts just before Episode III, it keeps going on into the events of the Original Trilogy, and then even further until somewhere around 15 ABY (somewhere between the Heir to the Empire Trilogy and The Hand of Thrawn Duology). Not only that, but just how many of the famous battles it manages to include: Coruscant, Order 66, Yavin, Hoth, Endor - and several other worlds in between, all of which usually have a ground level and a space level to match.
The game feels very refreshing on that level, where it genuinely seems like they had quite a bit of leeway from LucasArts to just go wild. While it's not very graceful as it goes about integrating itself into major Star Wars moments, there's just enough plausibility to make it work and in that way is reminiscent of the old N64 era of games like Shadows of the Empire.
Now we get to its actual merit as a game. Considering Elite Squadron was released for a platform that was essentially as powerful as the N64, for a series that began an entire console generation after the N64, the fact that N-Space even made the attempt is a little audacious. Every little achievement the game makes can't help but be followed by a little asterisk to indicate that, yeah, this was good... considering the limitations. Elite Squadron is good... for a DS port of a major console series. The game excels within its own self-imposed limitations, but when taken as part of the Battlefront series, it's quite literally a pale imitation.
The visuals have not aged well. The gameplay is about as basic as a top-down shooter can get. The AI for both sides is practically non-existent; even with a squad of soldiers tagging along, they rarely even attempt to shoot enemy NPCs. There are four (technically five) classes to unlock, but the game is not conducive to class-based gameplay, and commits the game design sin of introducing specific obstacles to force you to use all of the classes. Placing a door that has to be blown up to force you to use the Heavy class, placing a broken console to force you to repair it with the Engineer class, things like that. They're all one-and-done situations, made worse by having to backtrack to specific areas of a stage before you're allowed to switch.
Let's not forget that your character's range of attacks are wider than the AI's range for detecting you, so you can often take down entire platoons of enemy NPCs from a distance without them even acknowledging you or the fact that you're mowing down their buddies. The gameplay is just a mess; it's often too simple to be engaging, then too clunky and convoluted when a challenge occasionally rears its head. It's almost as if N-Space wanted Elite Squadron to be a "bullet hell" type of game, then paradoxically made decisions that removed that streamlined feeling of just pointing crazy weapons at waves of NPCs and letting loose.
So what's the big deal here? Why am I writing a review of a Battlefront game for the Nintendo DS if I can't even really make the claim that it's better than the sum of its parts?
It all goes back to that audaciousness that I mentioned earlier. There's an audaciousness in creating a Battlefront game for the Nintendo DS where the multiplayer side of things is almost an afterthought. (Four-player, local only. Ehhhhh.) N-Space made an uneven product that, I think, fell short of what they were trying to accomplish. But the fact remains that they looked at the game development canvas that the Nintendo DS's hardware limitations left them with, and still tried to create a true Star Wars experience.
The real redeeming qualities of Elite Squadron are in all the little details and all the various ways you are allowed to engage with the story. The opening involves an attack on Tatooine, where you see the shadows of incoming fighters passing over the stage. On Coruscant, you make your way through the city as debris rains down from the battle overhead, then hop in a fighter and fight your way to the Invisible Hand with Anakin and Obi-Wan; then you land in a droid battleship and turn its weapons on the Hand's defenses. In a stage where you ride through Geonosis many years after Episode 3, you pass by the decaying wreckage from Republic and CIS vehicles from the first battle of the Clone Wars. Or how about doing the trench run with Luke, and then scouting the leftover wreckage of the Death Star, complete with the bodies of stormtroopers floating around in space.
Though the story is short (I was able to finish it in under four hours), it also spans decades. Every environment, at the very least, feels unique. And though the gameplay is finicky, you have ground missions, space missions, speeder missions, brief ship-to-ship battles, turret sections, and even a couple orbital bombardment sections. Elite Squadron boasts a dozen planets and a few space stations on top of that. You dodge TIE bombing runs, you push General Grievous into freeway traffic, you swarm a Jedi with your fellow clone troopers on Order 66.
In the end, Elite Squadron on the Nintendo DS is an instance of a company looking at what was then a modern gaming experience and trying to translate it onto a platform that was nowhere near fit to host it. But instead of cutting things to fit, or making something safe like a side-scroller (ala Ubisoft's Revenge of the Sith for the DS), the devs just up and decided to reduce and distill, reduce and distill... and then reduce and distill some more until we got Elite Squadron. They had big ideas, a small canvas, and an unsteady hand that likely worked against their vision. Perhaps all they really ended up creating was a curiosity or a study in spartan game design during a unique time for interactive arts. It's one of those games that would be the perfect candidate for a remake/remaster with proper hindsight.
But dang it if they didn't set out to provide a sweeping Star Wars experience with the kind of scope that very few games in the franchise have attempted in recent years, and dang it if they didn't succeed... considering the limitations.

2020.11.27 11:04 ApophisDestroyer Trigger Warning and not for anyone under 18

Here it goes, some will judge, but I've been through the worst of that and am largely impervious to it. It's time to spill the beans.
I am a nearly 37 y.o. male, childhood wasn't perfect but not absolutely the worst it could have been either. I believe they wanted to put me on ritilin(?) for 'A.D.D.' but thankfully my mother fought that.
The most operative thing that stands out was that I had frequent episodes were I'd completely 'zone out'. In other words, if my teacher was talking directly to me, I could - not of my own volition - zone out; not even be aware of much of anything then 'come to' at the end of their lecture with absolutely no context.
Fast foward to my 20's, a few beatings later and bouts with hard drugs, I really didn't care about much about anything until 24 almost 25. I just wasn't all that educated on matters of society and human psychology. One day around that time I cold turkey quit the pain killers for my back (I knew I became addicted 2 years in & I had to stop) and started riding my bicycle on a trail out in nature where I accidently caught the 'runner's high'.
It was so magical, the next thing I know I felt like I connected to the universe, and right at about 25 I started to question everything, human nature, societal dynamics, monetary influence, etc. but I was naive enough to think it could all change. I was unrealistically optimistic to quite a detrimental level as I'd soon find.
That year my mentally compromised uncle would threaten to 'pull his shotgun' out on me for no good/valid reason at all, I attempted college at 26 constantly worried about my safety at home while suffering an existential crisis as my utopian view of the world came crashing down. I later looked back and realized these events were merely the first of many that caused severe to extreme anxiety & PTSD. At 27/28 I would start to feel a subsequent sickness and hindrance I could not shake and at 28 years old in 2012 I knew it was time to leave.
I met someone online, she flew me out to California and had me working 10 minutes after touchdown.
She was my manager and the most abusive person I had ever met up to that point. By 29 the constant anxiety was so severe that my vision even started to be affected by it. And I felt terribly ill 100% of the time.
She instructed me to "make yourself useful and become a massage therapist" so I did, because my thought process was that a boot to my neck was being applied regardless. During that time I became homeless on the streets of SF which further compounded my mental health & ultimately my health.
I was so malleable and impressionable that I didn't have a sense of personal boundaries. Many clients would go on to grope me, expose themselves etc. at my then place of work and while these acts did not traumatize me as far as I know, they contributed to my sense of being used and treated like a ragdoll (that's how I felt before I started practicing massage at that business, management absolutely 'broke me' as a receptionist there.
At 30 certification was complete and I finally landed a gig at SFO airport. Less than a year in I was let go because my anxiety was so extreme that it was causing me to lack punctuality.
Meanwhile I escaped the previous manager and living with her only to get into the most absolutely abusive live-in relationship I have ever encountered. Whereas the woman who flew me out was cruel & horrible in many ways, this next person was a total gaslighting psychopath who even physically & sexually abused me at certain points. I finally snapped on her and non-volitionally really, because my psyche could take no more.
After the airport gig I landed a job at a popular massage chain but I was so 'gone' by this point it was insurmountable really.
I would last 2 years, getting progressively worse over that time. I'd have moments of clarity where I knew something was wrong but I'd quickly forget. I developed P.O.T.S. I was at the doctors/E.R. frequently, saw an out of touch psychiatrist that I had to cut off whilst my mental decline would only get worse.
Many women came onto me at this place of business during sessions and when they asked me out, I cognitively knew to say "Oh I'm flattered but I don't date right now, it's not you." But when it was a physical thing, I lacked the volition to turn them down, throw the mental haze (to put it VERY lightly) in the mix I would even forget I was at work during these points.
I suppose it just became a very base level biological comfort at that point? That and a woman embracing me temporarily distracted me from the persistent terror I was feeling. Most of it wasn't even sexual when it happened, just intimate more or less.
Well in late 2016 I would have a client that I saw about 4 times before. Things got intimate, she thanked me for working her breasts & glutes, then for whatever reason, I'd go on to undrape her left leg. I got my face about 4 inches away from her uh, groin, I was so disassociated that I didn't even f**king realize that she snapped her arm down by her side, so she did it again and I came to and asked her what she said to which she replied "You got too close". I freaked, massaged her shoulder for the rest of the session, ended it went home and literally forgot it even happened.
Next day the acting manager called me in when I got there, I had no idea what about because I literally forgot. Well she reported it to the business and oh man I freaked. I didn't even concieve of the option to lie, I told him something definitely went down. Instantly I worried about what this meant for me, and if she was okay, they wanted me to finish my sessions for that day but I could only finish the session that was already there. I went home and mentally prepared for jail. My mom and her boyfriend pleaded with me to come back to florida so I waited for a couple of days because as scared as I was, i was determined to do my time if that was in the cards. Nothing happened so I packed up and flew out.
It just so happened that my then roommate was the one who recommended her to me so 4 days into me being back in florida, I get a text saying "That woman you molested was my friend you piece of shit go fuck yourself."
Anxiety kicks up and I can't help but to explain myself in reply back to him and the stuff he replied with was absolutely horrible "If you come near me or my daughters I'll break you". Oh I was so furious when he mentioned his daughter. I mean I may not be with it and not certain of much but I'm very certain that the possibility that I'm capable of something like that is extremely unlikely. He knew this too. Also he owed me about 700 dollars so we got into an altercation. He threated to come to my house in FL so I had to calm down and calm him down because my mom and her boyfriend would have definitely shot him to death over that. I informed him of/sent him pictures of the guns and told him that if he wanted to fight, fine, but it cannot happen at my house.
This.. This just compounded my issues so f*cking much I mean to the point where I spent a month in my then room curled up in a ball. In November I went to the local precinct, confessed and tried to turn myself in only to be met with the fact that there was no warrant issued for me and no detectable police report filed.
I ended up at my dad's in texas in 2017, he's generous but sociopathic/narcissistic (we're finally effectively building houses now), and I would get the woman's declaration in the mail later that year. She claimed she didn't feel 'assaulted' but that it was close to going there, but she failed to mention how she verbally thanked me (for working glutes/breasts). However I was not mad because she didn't really lie either and any part of her statement that I disagreed with just wasn't significant enough to dispute. I accepted my revocation by the state board and decided that it's likely not the profession for me, at least for the forseeable future.
My issue is, I never healed. Any woman who has pursued me in the last few years I've had to turn down because there's just alot of things I'm uncertain of plus, being neurotic does not bode well in a relationship. I have video games to destract, trying to get the ps5 to no avail, but yea, I totally cannot shake the guilt and because of that, the severe anxiety will likely persist. Because of how severe the anxiety is, I am 'stuck'. I've been through the ringer, on and off benzos, had to be admitted to psych a couple of times, I mean it's a total dumpster fire, so if anyone has any suggestions outside of seeing a fraudulent psych I'm all ears, even if that advice is telling me to go jump off a bridge lol.
And yea, if you want to be rhetorical and judge, I mean you can, people definitely have. But naturally I'm immune. Literally months after this happened in 2016 right as I got my bearings together enough to get a job the #metoo movement kicked off, just to give you an idea.
Naturally the brain is going to grow immune to that if exposed enough. And.. I'm still here after, trying to f**king heal...

2020.11.27 05:16 funkatronian Onward and Upward / Previous Inspiration

What up my people. Fan off/on since like 2008ish. Mainly due to just not having SXM. Last 4 years got into it real heavy. Currently, Dad in hospital due to stroke, COVID in general, Ellis got fired, 2020, Am I Right?
Anyway, I watched the whole recent Dr. Drew spot he had. I'm feeling pretty positive on the upcoming podcast angle, and pretty excited to try and share the love with friends who don't have SXM. There's a fun crescendo of negative to positive thinking on the entire Dr. Drew episode.
Appreciate anyone who put up torrent links. I'm on some of the older stuff right now and it's the one thing that's gonna pick me up at the moment. I'm sure he's gonna land on his feet. Someone that headstrong always makes it. Hope the crew stays together as well because Tully and Kevin are integral. Everyone else as well, but I feel you need these 3 minimum. Love all the rotating mics as well.
If you made it this far then I've got a tiny story and a quote that's been saved in my phone for the past year. I've had trouble drinking. Usual bullshit story. Lacking confidence, letting myself go, dating terrible people, getting cheated on. This has all changed drastically. I'm better than I ever thought i'd be, and going to live longer than I expected from myself.
Anyway, Ellis helped me turn a lot of my negative behavior around via the following quote. Also, to the haters, I realize he is a hypocrite many times, is a narcissist many times, blah blah blah, but when he's got a point, and believes it at the moment he is saying it, it can speak volumes and really stick with you. I hope that he turns that positivity inward and doesn't go dark and spiral. Red Dragons, See you on the other side, don't die.

Quote that I loosely transcribed and kept in my phone as gym and sobriety motivation:
Ellis 11/18/2019 1:07:30
That's another reason why. You really need to change your game up. You can't play with those ladies anymore. You need to know that it's the definition of insanity if you keep going out with people that keep making you feel less confident, you get smaller and go out with bigger pieces of shit until you're dead and you're gone. Change, like get off that highway and fuckin' go down another road cause this one ain't workin'. Ya know what I mean? Like that's what I'm saying, change your whole vibe. I would like just go to the gym all the time. Get a fuckin neck tattoo. You're old as hell. Looking a little hard? Like yeah maybe i am a little hard sometimes bitch, what's up? and then you'll find somebody. They'll give you a chance. If you meet people outside because you're going outside, cause your running around and shit cause you've got energy and you're not hungover and smoking cigarettes, then it's gonna happen for ya, and I know you want that. But i'm telling you, you've been going about it the wrong way and you're gonna be lonely about it and die by yourself if you keep doin' it. You can do whatever you want, I'm just right. I'm fucking spot on. If you change your shit up, and it won't happen tomorrow, but it will happen. You're almost there you've got some training and your confidence is up. I know you went through a bad relationship and she was trying to go out with somebody while you were still in the house. Then you started drinkin' a little more, like I know the routine. You've spiraled. You've gone down a bad path and i'm trying to get you off that one. Usually for me, you need a moment of clarity you just go, "Ok that roads crazy I just realized that's crazy." It needs to be super obvious and slap you in the face so you no longer go down that road. You always go down the opposite road of this one that you've been going down because this one doesn't look good for you. It makes you small. And this other one, who knows? New Road. Go down a new road. Get a whole new vibe. Cause you ain't old and you don't have kids, you can do whatever the fuck you want right now.

2020.11.27 01:46 NoseesoN Paper Mario fanfiction (Fire Emblem: Tokyo Mirage Awakening #1)

Before reading
Hello SPE! I would first of all like to introduce myself to this community. Despite not being an honorable elitist, I have been a long time lurker in this subreddit. I enjoy reading the “same two or three recycled jokes” from time to time, and appreciate the dark sense of humor and strong irony in these memes. However, what I find most interesting is the unexpectedly serious discussion that sometimes sprouts between the jokes, leading to a conversation that combines both fair critique with a sort of cynical humor. I like that a lot. Moreover, a relatively big group of people seem to agree that, although great at times, some Fire Emblem plots (specially those from three games) could be much better with some fixes. In particular, and you can blame me for being a FE3H baby and not remembering barely anything about Awakening, I feel like the latest entry has the most wasted potential.
My point is that I decided to make something moderately fruitful out of this sense of frustration, but that doesn’t mean I intend in any way to be disrespectful to the writers of the original storylines. I imagine they must have had a tight schedule, and considering how many things they have gotten right given the circumstances, their skill is admirable. I just wished it was the whole of it. In the light of this, bored and procrastinating, I wondered how I could alter a story with so much more to give, with so many tales to be told, so that a shitposter could feel once again enthralled by its dramatic twists and vibrant worlds of wonder. For this purpose, I resorted to a popular narrative trope that I considered to be quite fitting. The following short story aspires to portray a once in a kind playthrough, as faithful to players' wild imagination as I could, while mocking some of the game’s flaws. I hope you enjoy it.
In case you do not want to read this as a long text post, I prepared a video that recounts the story in another format, featuring a first time narrator with a weird accent, a low quality mic, and Windows Movie Maker. You should find it here.

White Clouds, Horsebow Moon Rumors of a Reaper
Laying back on bed, I turned on my Switch and greeted my dear anime cardboard box. I was on edge that day due to a bad discussion at work, and had resorted to the peacefulness of Garreg Mach to find some comfort. As I let my head seek more and more strongly the softness of my pillow, my armor became heavier, my hair turned a dark blue, and my hands gripped on to the Sword of the Creator. All around me, imposing medieval architecture rose from the void, emptiness was filled with a bright night sky, and a few white pegasus gliding over the Fódland woods crossed swiftly by my side, bringing together a landscape of miracle and fantasy. Turning my neck, I could see the ancient stone floor of the monastery getting steadily closer and closer, threatening a conclusion to my never-ending fall. Eventually, I hit the ground and landed comfortably on my feet, unharmed. I took a few seconds to breathe in.
It was perfect silence.
Then, as if waiting for the most inconvenient moment, a slim figure of purple eyes and white hair sneaked around the corner.
-Ah, it’s you. Out late again, I see. What brings you here?
Sometimes, there are moments that are exactly tilting enough to make you lose your temper. They are that one teabagging Ness that just pk'd fired you to oblivion, that one Super Paper Mario trick you have been trying to pull all weekend, that one Hollow Knight boss you just can't get through. Had it been only twenty one, instead of twenty two teabags, thirty seven instead of thirty eight failed attempts, six instead of seven tries of this chapter on Maddening, I wouldn't have furiously thrown my Switch to my nearest piece of furniture. Rising up from bed, all the bottled up emotions I had gathered throughout the day just took the wheel.
-I am so damn tired of your shit, Edelgard. I have listened to your support seven times and I still haven't heard a good reason for people to follow you like sheep into your psychopathic crusade against crests. I’m so glad I played Verdant Wind and Azure Moon before this unfinished mess.
My brown-haired, unimpressive self was already unplugging the charger and hastily preparing to get out of the room, but then heard something.
Something strange.
A cry of despair that would shatter everything I knew into pieces.
-W… what did you just say, Professor?
I hurried to my bed and grabbed the shoulders of the machine. “Now, quick, think”, I said to myself. I had watched plenty of these so-called “isekais” and I remembered how the main characters always made me cringe trying to amuse people off their fuck-ups in the first episodes. Therefore, I could not back down.
-Edelgard, I know you are the Flame Emperor. Let me finish. I have seen you die many times. You will bring this land nothing but suffering for poorly justified reasons. I know you made a deal with TWSITD (awfully long name btw), and that you will die soon anyways. Just leave this world in peace and make the Dark Spikes girl some company.
… maybe I had made a mistake. Her lavender gaze became the reflection of the purest form of disgust and horror I had ever witnessed, her sudden retching indicating she was about to puke out of shock. She stared at me a few seconds in utter disbelief, before running off to her personal quarters covering her mouth. Truly a gruesome experience.
-Can’t believe I made a girl cry at her first moments of self-awareness. Anyways, -I said while quickly turning away and closing my eyes- Bites za dusto!
As expected, nothing happened. I tried again.
-Divine pulse! -Nothing.- By the power of Sothis, Divine Pulse! -Nothing at all- Take me back, goddammit!
I crumbled down to my knees and started laughing and crying at the same time. Who knew karma would keep track of how dumb I think time rewind is.
I gained my composure back as quickly as I could and stood up. I wept some dust and tears off my anime tunic and proceeded with my isekai routine. If I couldn't avoid it, I figured I could at least try to take as much advantage of this as I could. There was one location in particular I had always set my eyes on.
-Hello Bernadetta! Ready for some more rounds of social anxiety parodied for comedic purposes?
The poor thing could barely speak.
-W-wah! D-don't sneak up on me like that, Professor! W-why are you here anyways?
I looked up and pointed to the source of an ethereal pale light.
-Nothing in particular. Have you ever looked at the moon, Bernadetta?
Surprised, she awkwardly muttered a reply.
-Of course I have! It's so nice to look at this time of the month. But why are you interested in it right now, Professor?
-Well, I do believe in the power of the stars, Bernadetta. They are vital for the understanding of all kinds of magic, both dark and beneficial.
-Hmmmm… I find it very interesting what you are saying, Professor, but weren't you a mercenary? What is your background on the study of magic?
She got me there.
-I… uh… above all, I am your Professor, and I'll have your respect, student!
Those loud words made her go back to her quirky, relatable self.
-Y-yes, Professor! I'm sorry for asking!
-Anyways, -I coughed- As I was saying, knowledge of astronomy is necessary for further learning of any sort of magic, Bernadetta. And there is no way to get better started than with a little counting exercise.
She was exceptionally mesmerized this time around.
-Y-you want me to count all of the stars in the sky tonight, Professor?
I smiled with satisfaction.
-Sharp mind. I want you to give me an accurate approximation of how many celestial bodies and other entities are visible at the current time, yes. You ought to have started by now.
-R-right! I think there are more than a thousand at this hour, Professor!
As she began her task, I stealthily infiltrated into her room.
-Come on, you haven't even spent a minute! Give it a real go.
-O-of course!
It was surprisingly tidy. I remembered from previous playthroughs that she liked knitting and writing, but I wondered if the developers actually took the time to write something into her notebooks, now that my actions weren't restricted. Digging through her personal belongings, I found a seemingly old and small book. I started reading.
Day 26, Horsebow Moon.
Today I am going to bed in complete darkness. It has been following me since sunrise. The void chases me around everywhere, and spreads infinitely in every direction until I am nothing within nothingness. My words are lost within, never to reach its destination, and the silence causes scorn to those living among the light. Oh, why me, great Goddess, why should I be the recipient of such punishment? Why should I keep trying to carry on this good for nothing burden? I beg to you, Goddess, to give me a reason to not give in to darkness.
"Ok, this is heavier than I imagined"- I thought. Another suicidal was in my ranks.
-Hey, Bernadetta… are you feeling okay? Do you need help with something?
She ignored me and looked at the opened doors behind me. Then, she approached in an instant, gave me the slap of my life, and ran away at speeds unbelievable. When she slapped me, I felt it in my cheek, not my anime cheek, but rather my real life, flesh and bone one. It was both painful and unexpected.
-C support achieved…?- I said while rubbing my cheek with one hand.
I started pondering what happened. Would this “damage logic” apply to bigger wounds? Could I be mortally injured? What would happen then?
Could I die?
Could I die? Could I die? Could I… die? What would happen if I turned my Switch off? I could really die.
Life won't give you time to assimilate things that can require centuries of introspeccion, and on this occasion, I had barely seconds.
Everything went dark. Like, really dark. Not as in the nocturnal way of going dark, more like being knocked out by a blunt hit on the head kind of going dark.
When I woke up, I was tied to a chair, from which I tried to struggle myself out in vain. A single oil lamp turned on, and that light was enough to help me recognise a familiar face lurking in the shadows.
-Yo! Hubert! Am I gonna get a two for one supports combo?
He punched me in the face. The recoil made me flinch to one side, and blood was spilled in both worlds.
-Shut it, insect. Lady Edelgard has brought me up-to-date on what happened. You have upset her. I should have killed you for that reason alone.
As he spoke, he cleaned the blood off his white gloves with a silk scarf.
-Using my fists is not something that suits me, but I might otherwise tear you to shreds on accident. They are still very persuasive, don’t you agree?
He then pulled a wooden chair into view and sat on it. He was scarier at eye level.
-Listen. You are still alive for two reasons. First, lady Edelgard has explicitly ordered me to not kill you, an order that I will uphold until you fall out of grace with her, which, given how you have treated her so far, will happen very soon. Second, I am extremely curious about what sort of spell you have used to gain such knowledge of lady Edelgard's ambitions. Of course, it couldn't have been advanced dark magic since you cannot be more than a beginner at best, but I fail to imagine any other way.
He leaned forward after making this statement, causing his ophidian features to stand out even more at the oil lamp's light.
-Answer me, insect, how did you do it?
I decided to give him an honest answer.
-You wouldn't understand.
I barely understood it myself. He didn't like the answer very much. After a strong jab to my guts, he replied with that typical calmness of his.
-I have no other duties pending this night, or the whole month for that matter. You will not be walking out of here until you talk.
He really didn't give me another choice.
-Hubert, I… I have a strange talent I was born with. I can see glimpses of the future when I close my eyes and set my mind to it. I know it doesn't make sense, but I can't really understand why or how it works myself, so I can't possibly try to explain it to someone else. You'll have to believe me in this.
-That is fair enough…
He smirked.
-However, that does not explain how, as you said, watched lady Edelgard die “many” times. Also, having a deep understanding of hypothetical Adrestian policies classifies as much more than just “glimpses”, does it not?
With each word, Hubert pressed me more and more and I felt the heart in my chest pounding faster and faster. The whole truth must be something I take to the grave with me.
-Sometimes, my predictions aren’t so accurate, and I can imagine multiple different versions of the same outcome. They can vary in length and content, being as short as a scream of terror, or as long as a nice walk along the ocean breeze.
I looked to one side and tried to appear as gloomy and mysterious as I could when saying the following.
-I can see people that I have never met and never will, and I know I won’t ever be able to touch them, talk to them, or save them from the imminent doom I’ve vaticinized. My chest hurts at the mere thought of how many lives have slipped between my hands, and how many others could have been shared with me, the Oracle. This is both my blessing and my curse.
I could see the skepticism growing in Hubert’s face. Despite that, he untied me immediately.
-I believe there is still more to this than you say, Professor, but lady Edelgard will be satisfied with what little information you have provided.
More lamps turned on and I realized that the room wasn’t nearly as big as I initially thought. A decrepit wooden door indicated the exit.
-Before you go, Professor.
I turned around and took one last glance at his eyebrowless profile before getting my freedom back.
-I suppose your intelligence is great enough to deduce that this conversation stays between these walls. The farce must continue, Professor.
I didn’t reply and just headed out. Looking around outside the creepy hut I was held in against my will, I saw tall trees and suspected I would have to walk a long way to get back to the monastery. By the time I got back to my room, I was exhausted.
A brand new fictional day. Right in the entrance of my room, I was met with Hubert and a slightly recovered version of Edelgard. I noticed she was still upset and reluctant to establish eye contact. I felt a bit guilty. Hubert talked first.
-Professor, there is some news in the monastery that I think would be of your great interest. Come with us, please.
I followed them up to the superior floors of the church and we went to Hanneman's office. There, an overexcited crestologist talked to me with a mixture of sadness and badly hidden enthusiasm.
-Professor! I have been trying to contact you all morning. There has been a series of events that must be brought to your attention. First, sadly,-
He put a face of genuine sorrow when giving me the news.
-Professor Manuela has been stabbed by a mysterious figure whose true identity may be related to Jeritza. She has been critically injured, and her wounds will take long to heal with magic, if they ever will.
-I'm so sorry to hear this, I will take over her duties while she's recovering.
-On that note,-
His enthusiastic side nonchalantly took over.
-There is another figure who claims to have been a mercenary just like you, that managed to rescue a past year's student and bring Manuela back to safety. She also appears to have defeated the so-called "Death Knight" in a legendary standoff and is willing to take over Manuela's duties.
Could it be…? Honestly, anything was possible now.
-Did you say a "she"?
A woman wearing an anime tunic with dark blue hair entered the room. Her belly button was exposed and she was wearing gothic leggings.
-Yes, he did. I'm Byleth. It's a pleasure to meet you.

I wish you've liked it! If this post is well received, I'll try to make uploads as frequently as I can, but it'll be hard to keep a constant pace because I'm studying a lot (or I am supposed to). Please leave your impressions down below and be as harsh criticizing as you need to be sincere! I greatly appreciate feedback because it helps improve my writing, which is the point of all of this.
P.S I'd be glad if you hadn't noticed yet, but although I have been learning English for quite a while, I'm not a native speaker, so I may have made grammatical errors or written things that sound strange to you. Please, tell me any times this happens, so I can edit the post and improve my English as well :D Have a nice day!
tl;dr: You don’t have to actually read this as a text post! Just click here and you should be able to enjoy probably the poorest video you have ever seen.

2020.11.26 23:13 LennyTheAwesome The mysteries of the Robot Masters

Hi, guys. New guy here. I'm a fan of Mega Man and I like the classic games the most (you know, Mega Man 1-11). Anyway, in each game, you as Mega Man have to fight against a generation of Robot Masters that are controlled by Dr. Wily. Well, I am always interested in the Robot Masters because they are like Toa from Bionicle, robots from Hero Factory, Transformers, DC Comics, Marvel, Ninjago, and Mixels. Now, they are quite mysterious in many ways, and we don't have clear evidence about their past or future. So, I have theories about that.

According to the intro scene in Mega Man 11, Dr. Light and Dr. Wily were students in Robot University. Light had a project that involves giving robots independent thought, like humans. Wily had a project about giving robots the Double Gear System, which is a device that can increase the robot's strength and speed. Light and Wily didn't agree with each other on their projects. However, Light ultimately told his superiors at the college to disapprove the DGS for everyone's good because he believed that it could out a strain on robots. The superiors approved the project about giving robots with independent thoughts. Wily didn't like this because Light always blocked Wily's research and never gave Wily a chance. Wily thinks that robots with independent thought would just be humans' mere tools, too. The disapproval of Wily's project made him so upset that he hated Light.

Before the events of Mega Man 1, Light's project happened. Light started off with Proto Man, whose number is DLN-000 (the DLN is short for Doctor Light Number, and it's there because Light created him), a prototype of Mega Man. There is something wrong with Proto Man's body, so PM disappeared, becoming a lonely anti-hero who doesn't get out much. Wily repaired PM, though, but PM is still his lonely self. Maybe there's something wrong with his head, so that could be why he wears a helmet.

In Mega Man 1, that's where Rock, DLN-001, and Roll, DLN-002, are created. Light also created the first six Robot Masters that are warriors and built with unique abilities that can help the world, numbers 3-8. Light also created two extra but unofficial Robot Masters, Time Man and Oil Man, with numbers DLN-00A and DLN-00B, in the remake called Powered Up in 2006. PM, Rock, and Roll are said to be called Robot Masters by species Wily kind of got involved with the creation of Rock, and he got jealous of Light being more praised by people than Wily, so that's where Wily turned evil. Wily stole the numbers 3-8 and Time Man and Oil Man, and controlled their minds. Rock wanted to stop these guys from harming the world, so he told Light to turn him into a fighting robot. After this, Rock is called Mega Man. He defeated the eight Robot Masters. In the end of the remake, after Mega defeated Wily, the Robot Masters were there to wave hi, as if Light made them good again.
In Mega Man 2, it is said that Wily created his own eight Robot Masters to fight Mega. These guys are numbered DWN-009 to DWN-016 (the DWN is short for Doctor Wily Number, and it's there because Wily created them). Half of them are based on most of the MM1 Robot Masters by Wily. However, I question why Wily never call these new guys DWN-001 to DWN-008 if he made them? I think Light was planning to make these guys because Light is the only one who uses his project, as he would make it a hobby or job, while Wily doesn't use Light's project, but Wily may have secretly stole the plans for the new guys and used them to build the robots. Wily then controlled these guys' minds to make them do evil things for him in MM2. It's like Episode 9 in Hero Factory where Black Phantom stole the plans for the Hero Factory, so he can make his army of robots, but he is told that these robots are heroes as always, so they would rebel against him, even though that he plans to use an evil substance to control them to be his loyal army. Anyway, Mega took care of these new Robot Masters. We don't know what happened to these guys since that game, but Light may have freed them from Wily's control over there, making them good again, and then have them do stuff for the world.
In Mega Man 3, it is said that Light and Wily were doing a truce, where they built at least seven new Robot Masters before Wily showed his true evil and controlled these new robots' minds. The eighth one, Shadow Man, is said to have a mysterious past, and Wily found him before he controlled Shadow Man's mind. It is rumored that SM may be an alien robot, and materials used to make him are looked at as something not from Earth. Well, that is not clear. In my theory, Light may have given Japanese people the plans for SM, so they built him. Plus, they may have found something strange and used it to make Shadow Man's body. Bass from MM8 is made of Bassium, which is a fictional substance in Earth, so it is possible that Shadow Man is made of another fictional substance from Earth. People just don't see these substances every day. SM may have accidentally caused an avalanche that hurt himself before Wily found him. Wily controlled all eight of MM3's Robot Masters' minds to have them attack the world while Wily stole a robot called Gamma from Light. Wily gave them Wily numbers. Mega defeated these Robot Masters and Light made them good.
In Mega Man 4, Dr. Crossak built his eight Robot Masters before Wily controlled these guys' minds and gave them Wily numbers. Light may have given Crossak the plans for the Robot Masters. Again, the defeating and making them good.
In Mega Man 5, Wily did the same thing as MM2. Again, with the defeating and making these Robot Masters good.
In Mega Man 6, each of eight countries has a new Robot Master before Wily controlled their minds and gave them Wily Numbers. I think Light may have given these countries the plans for these new Robot Masters. Again, with the defeating and making them good.
In Mega Man 7, four of the new Robot Masters were stolen from people by Wily while the other four were created by Wily. I believe during the events of MM6, Doctor Light had gave people plans for the Robot Masters who would then be stolen, and Wily stole the plans for the other four from Light to make them. Wily then controlled all eight fo these guys' minds and gave them Wily Numbers. He put them to sleep until he was arrested in MM6, which awakened four of these Robot Masters, and then Wily was freed, he unleashed the other four. Again, Mega defeated these eight Robot Masters and then Light made them good.
In Mega Man 8, Wily did the same thing as MM8, but he wasn't in jail this time. Again, these Robot Masters are defeated and Light made them good.
In Mega Man 9, Doctor Light made eight new Robot Masters and gave them Light Numbers, like in MM1. Wily controlled these guys' minds when he tricked them about the expiration dates. Again, Mega defeated these guys and Light made them good again. These Robot Masters are seen in the game's post-end credit scenes doing stuff with Mega Man and his family and close friends while one chased Wily in revenge.
In Mega Man 10, Wily did the same thing as MM6, but these Robot Masters are from companies rather than countries. Again, Mega defeated these Robot Masters and Light made them good.
In Mega Man 11, the most recent game, Wily did the same thing as MM10. Again, Mega defeated these Robot Masters and Light made them good. They are seen doing a group photo with Mega and his family and close friends after the end credits.
It's quite strange that after completing the game, the Robot Master warriors are never seen again. Maybe they are so busy with doing jobs in the world.
Proto Man fights like Mega Man, but he is wise and uses a shield.
These guys are all Light's creations in general and are in Light's side as always, but there are robots who are not officially related to these robots, but they share some similar qualities.
Bass is Wily's first robot that he created, owned, and copied Light's robot, as in he never stole Light's plans to make him, and Bass' own number is SWN-001 (Special Wily Number). Wily just studied Mega Man, and used Bassium to make Bass, who is Wily's own Mega Man. Bass can fight like Mega Man, who he always wants to defeat, and Wily could make his own Proto Man, Roll, and 86 other Robot Masters if he wants to (I would call them as Bass Robot Masters, and they would do the same thing as Bass does, but to their own regular counterparts, like Bass Cut Man fighting Cut Man, Bass Guts Man fighting Guts Man). Bass is very rebellious against Wily because of his own reasons, so he goes against Wily's plans whenever he feels like it.
In the Mega Man handheld series in the 1990s (five of them), there are three special robots called Megan Man Killers who are built by Wily to fight Mega Man. They have their own numbers, which are RKN-001 to RKN-003. However, I don't think they are Robot Masters. Also, there are nine alien Robot Masters from an alien civilization whose names are based on planets from our Solar System, and they have their own numbers. Wily mind-controlled them. Mega Man defeated these guys and it is implied that Light made them good and they live in Earth, as Jupiter has a rivalry with Gyro Man from Mega Man 5.
In Mega Man and Bass, the spin-off, Wily created a robot called King, who used plans for Robot Masters from MM1-8 to make his own six Robot Masters. He gave them his own numbers, KGN-001 to KGN-006. Plus, he may have controlled Tengu Man's and Astro Man's minds to serve him. Again, after Mega Man defeated these eight Robot Masters, Light made them good. Plus, Mega fought King, who then was mind-controlled by Wily during the fight, but Mega defeated him. King then was freed from Wily's control, reformed and is a wanderer, like Proto Man.
Wily makes mindless clones of Robot Masters in general in the fortresses to try to stop Mega Man from reaching Wily whenever Mega Man is in the fortress. Mega destroyed the clones. The same would apple to Super Rockman Adventure and Mega Man: Power Battle games.
There is an alien robot named Duo, who fights similarly to Mega Man in an arcade game called Mega Man 2: The Power Battle, but he uses energy that can destroy Evil Energy in MM8.
There are three robots in the Wily Tower part of a complication called The Wily Wars, who are like the Mega Man Killers.
In MM3, Wily created a robot called Doc Robot, who copied MM2's Robot Masters, who this robot is not a Robot Master. There are three machines in MM10 that copy a Robot Master from MM1-9. A boss in MM2 looks like Guts Man, but is large and has threads. Gamma looks like a King-Kong-sized version of Guts Man. In MM7, there are statues in Robot Museum that look like Robot Masters. They must be clones of the Robot Masters that Mega Man defeated. Wily took the Guts Man clone and turned it into a giant robot in his fortress. Mega Man defeated all of these harmful imposters and machines. Mega Man may have returned the Guts Man clone back to the museum and turned the clone back to the way it was.

In the Mega Man X series, there are robots from the future called Reploids who are like the Robot Masters, but they are people who think like human beings (the Robot Masters are just people who only focus on certain tasks for the world, like normal robots would do). Light created a robot called Mega Man X, whose number is DLN-00X, and Wily created a robot called Zero, whose number is DWN-00-Infinity. I believe Wily must have made Zero the same way he created Bass, the Mega Man Killers, and King, as Zero is not from Light's stolen plans, but he looks sort of like Proto Man. Wily also indirectly recreated Sigma. X, Zero, and Sigma are Reploids because of their minds.

So, there. Anyone agree with my theories? :)

2020.11.26 22:38 ijedi12345 Compare/Contrast for Episode 9

This is a somewhat special arc, since this one actually has two VN arcs attached to it: Tatarigoroshi and Tsukiotoshi. However, the divergence scene between the two hasn't happened yet, and probably won't until next episode.
The differences and notable similarities I noticed:
  1. The very first scene is changed completely. The next scene is at school with the Club eating lunch.
    1. In both, Okinomiya residents are bothered by a nearby smell, and go to find where the stench is coming from.
    2. In the VN, the stench is found to come from Rina's body, found in a drainage sewer.
    3. In Gou, the stench is coming from Teppei's apartment, but he scares off the people searching. The exact source of the stench remains unknown. Teppei is also found to be taking prescriptions in this scene.
  2. There is also an extra scene in the VN when Keiichi goes home to make a bento for tomorrow. Rena offers to help him out if Keiichi gives up, but only if he tries very hard first.
  3. The scene with Keiichi cooking at home goes pretty much the same, down to the pillar of fire Keiichi creates.
  4. There is an extra scene in the VN during school the next day, where the bento showdown happens. Rika and Satoko lose, but Keiichi volunteers to join the punishment game too.
  5. The scene with Satoko and Keiichi at the shop goes the same with minor dialogue differences. Though when he goes home with Satoko, his reason for going to the bathroom is different. In the VN, he needs to take a dump. In Gou, he needs to wash his hands at Satoko's urging.
  6. The schoolday after Keiichi gets the phone call that his parents are coming home has a scene where Keiichi plays a card game with Satoko. Keiichi also talks to the Club about what he ate for dinner yesterday.
  7. The events leading up to Keiichi going to the baseball game is different.
    1. In the VN, Keiichi's dad called people over for a business party. After Keiichi waits in his house for a bit, Satoko calls, claiming a real battle is happening.
    2. In Gou, Keiichi gets a call from Rena the moment he reaches his house, claiming a fight is happening.
    3. In both cases, Keiichi still grabs a golf club for the trip.
  8. When he arrives in the Okinomiya in the VN, Rika leads him to the baseball game. In Gou, he goes there alone.
  9. The baseball game in the VN also has Keiichi convincing Kameda to throw the game.
  10. When Shion shows up, she says she's the baseball team manager.
  11. In the VN, she also teases Mion a bit. She is later around when Keiichi is cleaning, and scares him a bit when he mentions Satoshi. She warns him to not talk about Satoshi again.
  12. In Gou, she also takes the opportunity to glomp Satoko since she's her "Big Shishter". She is absent during the scene where Keiichi cleans - he instead overhears two kids talking about Satoshi.
  13. When everyone starts cleaning just before going home in the VN, Satoko is present along with everyone else. In Gou, Satoko is gone. Rika claims Satoko went shopping for dinner.
  14. When Keiichi, Mion, and Rena head home, Keiichi asks about Satoshi. In the VN, Rena goes on a rant about Oyashiro until she is slapped by Mion. In Gou, Rena is clearly perturbed, but immediately goes home without incident. In both, Mion tells Keiichi about the support of Satoko's parents for the dam project after Rena leaves. Although in the VN, Mion also talks about how serious Rena is about Oyashiro.
Upcoming events according to both VNs:

2020.11.26 19:09 cal_ness The Nightmare Box – Part 1

I was always my mom’s favorite. Well, of course I was. I don’t have any brothers or sisters. Don’t have cousins, either. Don’t even have aunts or uncles, at least none who ever kept in touch with either of my parents. Growing up, it was just me, mom, and dad, who busied himself mostly with hating my mom from a distance. We lived in a drafty, four-story house with dozens of rooms I never even stepped inside for the twenty-some years I lived there.
My mom was the wispy type. She was a once-upon-a-time hippy who sort of floated around from one thing to the next like an untethered balloon. She was constantly bumping into things and pissing people off. Even her sing-song voice reminded you of that squeaky sound a balloon makes when its surface rubs something the wrong way. Mom’s nature drove off anyone who’d have added a normal dimension to my cloistered upbringing.
Mom was protective as hell, too. We had a weird relationship. Uncomfortable as it is to admit, I always felt like she’d have been fine marrying me and kicking my dad to the curb. Makes me woozy just thinking about it. But in that fierce, inappropriate love was an undeniable sense of protectiveness, a lioness vigilantly guarding her cub.
Suffice it to say, I was my mom’s everything. She did everything in her power to protect me from the world.
By the end, she was batshit crazy. Looking back, I wonder if she’d just been batshit crazy all along, if age slowly peeled back the onion layers to finally reveal the true craziness underneath. But the psychologists assured me that her final mental break constituted a new level of batshit.
If you’ve never heard of sundowners, let me be the first to tell you that it’s fucking terrifying. Watching your mom’s brain turn to goo is a helpless feeling. She spent the five o’clock hour for the last three months of her life wandering around the house talking to people who weren’t there, yelling at walls, and threatening to kill herself. As if our relationship hadn’t already been strained enough. But no matter how much inconvenience she caused me throughout my life, I felt pity for her.
During her sundowning episodes, she’d wander into the forgotten rooms in the old house, some of the ones I’d never stepped foot inside for as long as I lived there. The rooms were loaded with useless shit that my mom had hoarded over a lifetime and forgotten belongings from previous owners. The house was supposedly created by some nutty architect. It was chock-full of secret corners and hidden passageways. Four stories tall (who the fuck builds a four-story house?) with snaking hallways connecting each empty room to the next, steep stairways leading between the floors, and a blanket of dust covering all of it on account of the massive place being impossible to keep clean.
Even as a thirty-year-old, I felt scared to follow mom into those forgotten rooms. I’d let her sundowning episodes run their course, waiting until her threadbare sanity returned and she found her way back to find me. But on the occasions she didn’t snap out of it, I had to play her unsettling games of hide-and-seek.
I’m making my mom sound like a purely bad person, but she had a good heart underneath the nuttiness, at least at some point. Things got worse over the years, but when I was really young, I remember my family being somewhat happy. Mom didn’t have a day job so she made being a parent her full-time gig. Growing up, I was never allowed to watch TV or play video games, but she always created activities to keep me busy. Friends who came to sleep over –– aside from being scared as hell of the old house –– wondered why we couldn’t just plug in a VHS. But mom always insisted that “A child’s imagination is a wonderful thing” and that “TV is one of society’s most malignant cancers.”
Instead of TV, Mom would hide things –– candy, cookies, homemade toys –– and create a meticulous treasure map for me to find them. She’d write a series of riddles which, if I solved them, would win me a pizza night. Our yard –– overgrown, just as maze-like and disorderly as the house itself –– was a veritable jungle. If I found the special amulet she’d hidden (a painted mason jar lid with thread poked through a hole to make it wearable), I’d get a pocket full of quarters to spend at the local arcade. A few hours at the arcade was a rarity, but the prospect of winning the big kahuna made her stupid games worth playing.
Mom also took a homemade, homeopathic approach to helping me deal with the traumas inherent to growing up. Throughout my childhood, I always had nightmares –– bad ones. It was probably on account of growing up in a terrifying old house without any role models besides my kooky mom and absentminded dad, but that’s another story.
Mom eventually came up with a solution: the Nightmare Box. She whittled it herself, nicking her fingertips with the carving blade a dozen times in the process. The box was plain, simple, and square. There was no stain or varnish. The only texture on the outside came from the rough cuts my mom had made into the piece of wood. She fastened on a tiny brass clasp that kept the lid shut, and screwed in some cheap hinges from a local craft store on the box’s backside.
The box opened, but I was strictly instructed to always keep it closed.
“You can put your nightmares in,” mom had said, with her ecstatic, toothy smile. “But you don’t ever need to open it. We have to trap the nightmares, see? Don’t ever let them out once you put them in.”
I obeyed her. Mom had a weird mystic quality, and I’d always assumed she was clued into some secret of the universe I’d never comprehend. So I kept the box closed, and every night before bed, while other kids around the country were kneeling down to say the Lord’s Prayer, I was doing my best to channel my nightmares into the box.
One of my most vivid memories of childhood was mom’s late-night visits to my bedroom. I woke up almost every time, and through cracked eyelids, I’d watch her grab the Nightmare Box from my bed stand. Other kids had a tooth fairy –– I had a nightmare fairy. Mom would take the box over to my window, crack the window open, and empty the invisible, imagined contents of the box into the night. Then she’d come back over, place it on my bedside table again, and go back out the way she came.
Strangely, the idea worked. I still had nightmares occasionally, but I wasn’t scared of having them anymore. I came to realize they were dreams, just strange ones, a different part of my subconscious making itself known. With a little mental makebelieve, I learned to put my nightmares in the box, and obeying my mom, I kept them there by always keeping the lid closed.
I still hadn’t opened the box until a few weeks ago.
Before we get to that, real quick, I need to tell you a few more things for everything to make sense. Let’s go back to mom being a good person past all the eccentricities, which I think is important to reaffirm. Despite all the darkness of what happened, I want to remember the good stuff, too.
Outside of treasure maps, homemade puzzles, and Nightmare Boxes, mom was one of my biggest cheerleaders in school. She pushed me to study hard so I could make it out of our shit town and go to college. She served on the PTA all throughout elementary school, annoying the shit out of all the other parents but vocalizing her opinions anyway. Her homemade cookies always went untouched on account of people being scared she’d snuck some hippy shit into them, but she showed up for me.
She went out of her way to do good deeds for others, too. She organized canned food drives in the neighborhood every holiday season even though we didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas at the house. She worked with the city planners to create a space in an old, abandoned parking lot for homeless people, equipped with toilets, fresh water, and soup served every night by volunteers. When Thea Mitchell from down the street went missing, my mom organized search parties that went out every night. Mom became obsessed with finding Thea and giving her family closure. Long after everyone else stopped, my mom kept her investigations going. I remember countless nights when mom would have tears in her eyes at dinnertime, lamenting how hard it would be to lose a child while my dad glared at her from his seat at the head of the table.
Mom’s obsession with Thea surprised me because, on the one day she had seen me walking home from school with Thea, flirting as horny middle schoolers tend to do, she scolded me.
“I don’t like her long hair,” mom had said. “Girls with long hair like that –– well, I don’t know, but I just don’t like it.”
Thea did have long hair. Long, blonde, beautiful hair. She was the envy of every other girl in town. She was the most popular girl in school, but she had enemies, countless girls who whispered about her in the hallways, driven by jealousy. Thea’s hair (and the cut off jean shorts she always wore in the warm months) was part of why I had such a vicious crush on her. For a few weeks, we dated, if you can call it that. It consisted mostly of sitting together at lunch and walking home together the one time my mom saw us.
After meeting my mom and seeing how lonely and strange my home life was after school one day, Thea, like pretty much every other kid who’d seen the same, said that she wasn’t interested in me anymore. That was that.
When Thea disappeared, mom showed up. Mom had known about my crush. She saw how big a toll Thea’s disappearance had taken on me. In addition to her nightly searches around the neighborhood, eventually, mom devoted an empty room on the first floor of our house to her amateur investigations. After she finally stopped searching the neighborhood, she spent what seemed like every waking hour in the room. The walls were covered with maps of town scrawled with notes written in mom’s elegant, loopy handwriting, pictures of Thea, and thumbtacks and twine connecting all of it together. She kept after it long after everyone in town, including Thea’s parents, gave up. She did it out of love for me.
I’d hear my mom talking to herself in the room one floor below my bedroom –– the one she’d turned into Thea Mitchell HQ. At the time, I needed the Nightmare Box more than ever. I swore I could Thea wailing on the night wind outside my bedroom window. Even at age fourteen, I put my sadness, frustration, and despair into the box, never opening it on account of my promise to mom and fear of what might escape if I did.
My mom’s obsession with Thea’s disappearance eventually sent her over the edge. One day over breakfast, my dad staring at mom with hateful eyes over the top of his newspaper, she collapsed. She seized on the ground until the paramedics came, my dad, looking on indifferently, me crying on the ground next to her, begging her to snap out of it. I remember mom staring at me with a glazed, milky stare as the paramedics carted her out. I knew at that moment that whatever sanity my mom once had was now completely gone.
Dad had her committed, then ditched town without saying much. Child and family services decided that it was okay for me to stay with my best friend, who lived down the street, on account of not having any family and being old enough –– in ninth grade, at the time –– to keep up my studies in school. I visited my mom occasionally and did my best to live somewhat of a normal life.
The rest of high school came and went. The old house stood there, empty, still owned by my family, filled with our junk. It was a grim inheritance waiting for me once I got old enough to do something with it. The Nightmare Box was in there too, sitting in my childhood bedroom on the nightstand collecting dust. I forgot about it eventually.
Senior year of high school, I got into a liberal arts college on the opposite side of the state. I went for two years, studying English with a focus on journalism. Then I dropped out and decided to move back home and care for mom. As much grief as she’d caused me throughout my childhood, she had cared for me when my dad hadn’t. Seeing her in the insane asylum (they called it a “care facility,” but it was an insane asylum) made me sad. However nutty she was, mom didn’t deserve to be locked up like that, so I quit school and became her full-time caregiver.
During the almost ten years I cared for her, I watched my mom decline. The sundowning episodes became more frequent. Eventually, she talked to people who weren’t there and yelled at the walls even when she wasn’t in an episode. I moved into my childhood bedroom on the second floor –– I had to have some space from my mom, who I’d set up in the room above mine, which was one floor beneath her and dad’s old bedroom up on the fourth floor.
In October of last year, mom climbed up to their bedroom and followed through on her promise to kill herself. She jumped out the window, impaling herself on the wrought iron fence that surrounded our house four stories below.
After I got over the grisliness of it, I felt relief. The coroner assured me that mom had died on impact. Now, she’s finally at peace.
***
Earlier this year, I finally decided to sell the old house and move on with my life. I entered rooms for the first time and tossed most of the crap out: old books, stuff from my mom’s childhood, files from dad’s old clients, and junk that belonged to previous owners. It was tedious work, but there was relief in it. I was finally able to let go of things, to strip away the baggage of my strange life and leave it in a dumpster.
When I was cleaning out my mom and dad’s old bedroom up on the fourth floor, the one where she’d committed suicide, everything changed. On the old dresser, tucked next to jewelry containers, scattered makeup, and crumpled clothes from another lifetime, I saw the Nightmare Box. Until that moment, I’d forgotten about it. The box was the only thing in the room that wasn’t covered in about fifteen years of dust. A voice of reason told me to throw it into the trashcan along with all the other junk, but the fact that it wasn’t covered in dust caught my attention. Someone had been picking it up, handling it, even though everything else in the room had been left untouched.
I decided to open it for the first time. Despite all the warnings my mom had given me throughout my childhood about what would happen if I did, I pried up the old clasps with shaky fingers.
Inside the box, I found another one of mom’s games. No nightmares, just four trinkets. There was a homemade compass, an old skeleton key, a razorblade covered in blood-colored rust, and a yellowed scrap of paper. On the piece of paper were two words written in my mom’s elegant, loopy handwriting: Itchy Scratchy.
Surely it was just more evidence that my mom, before she’d finally died, had gone completely batshit. But a little voice inside my head said there was something to it. There had to be –– there was always a deeper layer when it came to mom’s games. Every puzzle had a solution. Every riddle had an answer.
The logical place to start was the compass. I took it out, and its needle started spinning around randomly. It sure as hell wasn’t pointing north, which was the direction my mom and dad’s bedroom window had faced. I decided to walk around the house and see if the needle was being drawn to something. I wandered around for a half-hour like I was a kid again, following the treasure map or hunting down the lost amulet in our overgrown yard. There was nothing on the fourth floor. But as soon as I walked away from my mom and dad’s old bedroom, I noticed the needle was pointing straight back in that direction. I walked down to the third floor. Nothing there, either. The needle pointed back to the room directly below the old master –– the room I’d set my mom up in for the final years of her life –– but once I went inside, the compass needle started spinning in circles again.
There was nothing on the second floor, either. In my old bedroom, the compass needle continued its crazy dance. When I finally made it to the first floor, I found the source. It was in the room adjacent to the kitchen, underneath my bedroom, mom’s temporary room on the third floor, and the master where I’d found the Nightmare Box. The compass had led me to the old room my mom had turned into her headquarters for finding Thea Mitchell. Around the room, the pictures of Thea and town maps still covered the walls. The thumbtacks and twine were there as well, connecting my mom’s hair brain theories. Continuing to follow the taut compass needle, I saw the homemade magnet it was attracted to: a large steel rod to which my mom had taped a picture of her and me. I had to have been in third or fourth grade in the picture, sitting in front of mom with an anxious half-smile, her behind me with that ecstatic, toothy, almost comedic grin that warned of something unhinged deep inside, which had waited until later years to reveal itself.
Wrapped around the steel rod was an ugly nest of copper wire. A thick braid of wire led to a DieHard truck battery, which had begun bleeding acid onto the floorboards below. How long had the magnet been there? Years? How long had my mom been designing this final game?
I felt my hand, still holding the Nightmare Box, being pulled toward the magnet. It was the key inside. I noticed that the car keys in my pocket were being pulled toward it as well.
One puzzle piece down. I dropped the compass to the ground. Behind the magnet and the picture of my mom and I was a pile of old wooden chairs. On the other side was a blank wall. Past the chairs –– their wooden legs like tree branches in an overgrown forest –– I saw that the wallpaper was a different color. It was floral print, with pink flowers intertwined on a mint green background. It was the same pattern as the wallpaper surrounding it, but newer, more vibrant. The difference was slight, so slight that you wouldn’t have noticed unless you had a reason to look. I moved the chairs aside. Then I realized that the new wallpaper was a rectangle in the shape of a doorway.
Three pieces of the puzzle left. The skeleton key, the razor blade, and the yellowed piece of paper with the words Itchy Scratchy written in my mom’s handwriting. I took the razor and cut the wallpaper along the shape of the doorway. It went right through, except when I hit the hinges on the left side of the door frame. After finishing cutting the shape, I dropped the razor blade and ripped back the wallpaper. It stuck to the frame, letting up puffs of old glue as the paper clung to the wood.
Two puzzle pieces left. The skeleton key fit perfectly into the door’s lock. I opened it. On the other side, there was a rickety wooden staircase leading down to a dark cellar that I never knew existed. I flipped a light switch next to me, and a set of naked bulbs, strung together by exposed wire, lit the passage, a dull yellow light shining through decades-old dust. I descended the stairs, which creaked in protest beneath my feet. At the bottom, was a dirt-floored corridor leading to another room.
The place was an abandoned wine cellar. Ancient bottles filled some of the racks, but most slots were empty. How much time had my mom spent down here? Why had she spent any time down here? I started realizing that this was her solution to my childhood problem of having bad dreams. This was where the nightmares I’d put into the box all those years lived, even though my mom had pretended to let them go on the night wind outside my open bedroom window.
Carved into the wooden wine racks along the corridor were a variety of messages:
God is watching.
The truth is in the stars.
Sluts never prosper.
Baby deserves love.
No more nightmares.
God is dead.
The dirt-floored corridor was silent, but I covered my ears anyway. Every scrawled message was written in my mom’s voice. Her words pounded in my ears.
I finally reached the room at the end of the corridor and opened the door. If it had once been another part of the wine cellar, some previous owner had turned it into a woodshop. But as opposed to wood, the room smelled like decades-old death. Whatever had died in here had been dead for a long time. Scabbed over. Leathered. Mummified.
Sitting in a chair in the middle of the room, arms and legs bound to it with leather straps, was Thea Mitchell’s corpse. I knew it was her because the corpse was approximately the same height as she was. It was also wearing cutoff jean shorts, the same ones Thea had been wearing the afternoon before she’d disappeared. The same ones she always wore in the warm months.
I walked forward to look more closely at Thea. One thing that wasn’t the same was that her long, beautiful hair was gone, shorn down to the scalp. What was left of her hair had been cut to the skin in some places, which was scarred by haphazard scissor marks.
Thea was wearing something strange. A shirt. Looking closer, I realized it was a shirt made of her own hair, from the chopped up pieces of her once beautiful locks.
Around the room on the workbenches were a variety of torture implements –– pliers, several screwdrivers, hundreds of razor blades covered in blood like the one my mom had left me to cut the wallpaper. There were syringes full of gelatinous gunk –– some sort of homemade drug my mom had used to keep Thea calm –– and junk food wrappers strewn about next to a dozen containers filled with human waste.
I looked down at the Nightmare Box, then back up at the mummified corpse of a fourteen-year-old girl wearing a hair shirt. There was one final clue, mom’s last game, her dying gift to her beloved son. Two words scrawled on a yellowed piece of paper that have become burrowed under my skin like a festering splinter of Thea’s hair:
Itchy Scratchy.
***
Why did mom do it? To punish Thea for deciding she didn’t like me anymore? Because she didn’t like her hair? The unanswered questions haunt me. Maybe mom went crazy earlier than any of us thought. People don’t become evil overnight. How much other stuff had my mom done throughout her life that would make her grim torture chamber look tame by comparison?
After twenty years, Thea Mitchell’s family finally got closure. I decided to have the old house bulldozed, then I put the property up for sale. There was a petition in town for the city to reappropriate the land and turn it into a community garden in Thea’s memory. I signed my name next to a few hundred others, but a rich real-estate developer from the opposite side of the state swooped in, paid off the city, and started breaking ground for a luxury apartment complex a month later.
Taking the money felt dirty, but it was enough for me to move somewhere else and start over. My mom went down in the history books as a sadist murderer. It was one of the more disturbing moments in the history of our small town, but most people forgot once a few news cycles passed.
It feels selfish to admit, but I think the hardest part for me is that no matter how far away I move, I can’t forget what happened. For the first time since someplace in the middle of my troubled childhood, the Nightmare Box is full again.

Non-steam deals don't have links because mods told me to remove those - looks like all sites other than Steam are spam.
Must haves:

Valve Complete Pack - $2 per game

https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/232/Valve_Complete_Pack/
Half Life 1 + expansions - still holds up decently
Half Life 2 + Episodes - lots of content if you enjoy story focused games
Left 4 Dead 1+2 - the best coop FPS games in existence without a shadow of a doubt.
Portal 1+2 - definitely GOAT games. Great FPP puzzles, awesome writing.

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition - $4

https://store.steampowered.com/app/501590/Bulletstorm_Full_Clip_Edition/
One of the most creative FPS games ever made. Not perfect by any means, but you should not skip it if you've ever enjoyed an FPS campaign.

Salt & Sanctuary - $4

https://store.steampowered.com/app/283640/Salt_and_Sanctuary/
2D Soulslike - Metroidvania. Despite being one of the first attempts at this sort of thing, it totally succeeded and the experience is almost all superb.

Hollow Knight - $7

https://store.steampowered.com/app/367520/Hollow_Knight/
2D Soulslike - Metroidvania. You've heard about it and it's only gotten better with time and updates. Whoever you are, you should probably play it. I mean, everyone else has.

Dirt Rally 2.0 - $6

https://store.steampowered.com/app/690790/DiRT_Rally_20/
Best rally racing game around.

DOOM 2016 - $5

No link. It's on the gamebillet store
Not part of the steam sale, but I have to include it and it is the steam version. Second best singleplayer FPS ever. Only second because Eternal (15 EUR on GameBillet) exists.

Mirror's Edge - $5

https://store.steampowered.com/app/17410/Mirrors_Edge/
Legendary and still unmatched FPP parkour game. You need to play this.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - $5

https://store.steampowered.com/app/287700/METAL_GEAR_SOLID_V_THE_PHANTOM_PAIN/
Even if you haven't played the previous entries, this game is worth playing despite the story going half over your head. It's open world but only if you want it to be. There's a staggering amount of tools and toys to use while infiltrating and the game is one of the most polished titles I've ever played.
The biggest fault of it is the silenced pistol and certain buddies being way more useful than the alternatives, so you might want to conciously make an effort to try everything else out too.

Transistor - $3

https://store.steampowered.com/app/237930/
Great, deep gameplay, touching story and the most beautiful soundtrack to a videogame I've ever heard and the only piece of music that makes me tear up I've ever encountered. I recommend getting the game + OST pack for $5.
Pyre and Bastion (same developer) are also discounted heavily. Transistor is by far my favourite, but Pyre is innovative and superb story-wise and Bastion is pretty and cheap.

GRID 2019 - $6 / $8 for Ultimate

https://store.steampowered.com/app/703860/GRID/
Hands down my favourite racing game. It's a simcade title that lasted 100 hours for me just getting golds in all singleplayer events available in the ultimate edition (standard edition has less content, but still a lot) and it plays well on both a keyboard and a controller.

Celeste - $6.60

https://store.steampowered.com/app/504230/Celeste/
Probably the best platformer to date. If you missed it being free on Epic, this is your chance to get in on the game that will set the standard for all other 2D platformers for a long time. For both the hardcore and casual player.

FEAR Collection - $10

https://store.steampowered.com/sub/12357/
FEAR 1 and its expansions are cult classics whose quality hasn't been emulated to this day.
You also get FEAR 2 and FEAR 3, whose quality is less than remarkable, but they're still okay games.
The horror in these games isn't really effective, but it's also not the focus. These are FPS action games with bits and pieces of horror, not the other way around.

Dead Space 1 / 2 - $5 / $3

https://store.steampowered.com/app/17470/
2Game has a better deal on Dead Space 2, so go for that. Regardless of where you buy the games, these are great TPP, horror themed shooter games. They clearly emulate what's best about Resident Evil 4 while offering a different setting, more creative enemy/weapon designs and a different brand of level design.
I personally prefer them to RE4 and Dead Space 2 is the better of the two if you're after the action, not the horror.

Resident Evil series - from $5.50

https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/261/Resident_EvilBiohazard_Collectors_Pack/
Resident Evil 4 is the classic that determined what the franchise would look like for a long time.
Resident Evil: Revelations is the most similar game to it and my personal favourite.
Resident Evil 5 is a good coop game, but disappointing to fans of the horror-focused original trilogy. It's not like there's no horror at all, but its sunny setting is a stark change and the game tries to be more fast paced than 4.
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has more production value and better characters than the first RE:R, but the asymmetric coop falls flat, the levels are a mixed bag, and you can get softlocked and forced to restart a whole chapter. It's not bad, just worse.
Steam also has deals on RE6 and remakes of RE2 and RE3, but 6 is overpriced and the others are still kinda expensive for this list.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut - $3

https://store.steampowered.com/app/238010/Deus_Ex_Human_Revolution__Directors_Cut/
Immersive Sim/RPG that includes options because they can be used rather than out of obligation. Combat is a mix of TPP and FPP shooting and stealth, depending on your build, but you can skip some of that via dialogue and are only required to kill a handful of enemies.
The sequel is also discounted ($4 on Steam) and was reasonably well received.

Prey 2017 - $6 / $5 on 2game

https://store.steampowered.com/app/480490/Prey/
THE modern immersive sim. Choice is the name of the game, the story is delivered in a very effective way (instead of cutscenes, you usually get very well voiced audio messages while you play, so no time is wasted) and the game simply has a lot of soul. There are some cut corners with how much backtracking there is and how most places can be accessed almost regardless of your character build at the same time with the same amount of effort, but it's still one of the most memorable games of the 8th generation.
INSTALL IT ON AN SSD. You'll see a lot of loading screens and the difference in loading times is staggering.

Titanfall 2 - $6

On Origin
Great kinetic FPS campaign. It's only 6 hours, but has a multiplayer mode that might keep you engaged after that.

Super Meat Boy - $2

https://store.steampowered.com/app/40800/Super_Meat_Boy/
Legendary indie platforming classic. Very tough, but if you like that, it's a must play.

Dishonored: Definitive Edition / Dishonored 2 - $4.50 / $7

Both on IndieGala
Great FPP stealth games. Second one has some technical issues though, so be aware of that.

Other deals worth your attention:

Stardew Valley - $10 - Animal Crossing with pixelart on PC.
Invisigun Reloaded - $2 - Innovative couch versus game where you don't see other players... or yourself.
Screencheat - $6 - pretty much the same as the above, but it's an FPS. You've done this in Halo 3 before.
Tomb Raider and The Guardian of Light - $2 - awesome coop twin stick shootepuzzler.
Tomb Raider (the new trilogy) - if you've always wanted to play uncharted but never had a console. They're okay games, but get worse as the series goes on.
Styx: Master of Shadows (on HumbleBundle) and Styx: Shards of Darkness - $2 / $4 - decent stealth games, you don't get many of those.
Trine series - from $4 per game - beautiful coop platformer-puzzle games. Trine 3 wasn't very well received, but 1,2 and 4 are a good time.
Lethal League - $6.60 - another creative local multiplayer title, this time you're playing Smash Brothers with a baseball.
ELDERBORN - $9 - FPP melee combat singleplayer game. Not the best deal, but it's pretty new.
Duck Game - $5 - Super Smash Brothers with guns. And Ducks.
Dust: An Elysian Tail - $4 - Metroidvania for furries and fans of over the top combat.
FORCED - $4 - decent couch coop brawler
The Talos Principle - $4 - sorta like portal but without movement mechanics and with more difficult puzzles instead. Very good game.
Binary Domain - $3 - good TPP cover shooter. Yes, those exist.
Castle Crashers + Battleblock Theater - $6 / $3 each - a couch coop brawler and platformer with pretty universal appeal.
Crysis 1, Warhead and 2 - $5, $5, $7 - decent FPS campaigns.
Bioshock Collection - $5 for each of the first two - some people in the comments mentioned this.
